Teaching Kids How to Conserve the Environment

What To Do If Your Child Has Swallowed A Lead-Based Toys

There are many toy products that contain lead that are virtually safe for your children to play with, but only if played with safely. It can be difficult to know whether or not toys that your children are playing with contain lead, though. This is why, if you suspect that your child has swallowed any toy, you should treat it as if it was a lead-based toy. This way, your child has the lead detected to treat it before it becomes serious to your child's health. Here's what you should do:

  • Get a Blood Test: The first thing you should do is take your child to the doctor to get a blood test to detect lead in their system. Lead should not be in the blood at all since lead is not safe at any level. If it is detected, then you can proceed with treatment. If not detected, then you don't have to worry that whatever they swallowed will cause health problems. Most likely, it will pass through their digestive system safely.
  • Do Not Buy Toy Jewelry: As a parent, it's best not to buy any toy jewelry unless it is labeled to be lead-free. This is because most toy jewelry is made with lead and is easily swallowed. It is better to be safe than sorry and just say no if your child wants to bring home any toy jewelry.
  • Look for Recalls:  All lead products that have been deemed unsafe because it has been swallowed will be recalled. This is why it's important to check this recall list often and discard anything in your home that has been put on this list. Even if you believe your child would never swallow the product, you should still toss it right away.
  • Make a Complaint: If the toy that your child has swallowed that contained lead is not on the recall list, you need to make a complaint right away. Be sure to save medical records that indicate your child has been exposed to lead by swallowing the toy in question. This way, it is added to the recall list so that the product can no longer be available to harm anyone else.

When you know what to do in the case that your child has swallowed a lead-based toy, you can be sure that you keep your child safe, as well as other children in the future by making your complaint known.
